I LOVE YOU MOM….HERE’S A PAINTED ROCK!

May 13, 2017 by Ashley Leave a Comment

Happy Mother’s Day Everyone!

To all the human moms and animal moms out there today we celebrate you! Take the day off! Relax and enjoy your day!

I love, love, love my mom. She is awesome! Shout out to Linda! My mom and I live across the country from each other and we don’t get to see each other much. It is a huge bummer so we try and keep in touch in unconventional ways, like homemade gifts! This year I made my mom an unconventional gift. Even though I am not a kid anymore I still think gifts you make yourself are the best. I think moms out there would agree!

There is one thing that my mom loves now that she lives in Florida. These items seem to be unavailable in appropriate sizes in Florida. You may have guessed it already by the title of the post..ROCKS! My mom is always on the lookout for a nice big rock for her garden. Apparently Florida is mostly sand so large rocks are not readily available.

This Mother’s Day I am sending my mom her favorite thing. A big ROCK! I wanna rock!

I jazzed this rock up a bunch with some easy craft store paint and brushes and a lot of googling. If you have a mom that is totally into gardening this is a great project. This is a great projects for kids to do as well. They can paint lots of cool things for moms!

We have some big decorative rocks in our yard so I grabbed one that had some flat surfaces and washed all of the dirt off and it was ready to go! Florida is all about bright colors and tropical things so I googled images of cartoon flamingos and hibiscus flowers. Using the cartoon images gave me easy outlines to trace. I used a pencil to trace the images onto the rocks. Now painting!

79 cent paints from Michaels are the best! They are so versatile. I keep a stash of them and every time I have a project I add a few colors. This time I went with coral, blue, and bright green. Bright colors work well with the Florida vibe.

The best way to paint rocks is to work in layers. The paint is so easy to work with that you can almost never screw it up. I started with a base color and added other colors as I went. This gives the flamingos and flowers some nice depth and detail. With the lighter colors you may have to do a few coats, just like DIY house painting!

This rock turned out amazing! My mom loved it! She said it was the perfect gift for her and she couldn’t wait to find a spot for it in her yard!

Happy Mother’s Day Everyone!
