Spring Project Update!

April 19, 2017 by Ashley 2 Comments

Hey everyone! Happy Spring! It’s Spring Project Update Time!

Ben and I have decided to do a mini renovation in our main floor bathroom, otherwise known as the yellow bathroom. I am super excited to share with you all what we have designed for the bathroom refresh. I hope this post will be done next week! Partial sneak peek… We are getting a new toilet!

In the meantime we have been super busy getting ready to start spring projects that we have planned over the winter… like the exterior door painting and updates! We picked the charcoal and black scheme with the stainless steel tube downlights! We are testing the paint colors right now and looking for the perfect storm door. I want to get this done before we buy plants. I am super excited to punch up the color of the house with bright colored plants and pots!

We are also finalizing what we want to do for our new kitchen floor. This spring has been really muddy at our house and this changed our minds about what the right solution is for the floor. Let’s just say that the mud is out of control and it is a HUGE problem.

The girls have been having a blast running around the mud pit that is our backyard but we can’t keep up with cleaning their paws and not getting mud all over the rest of the house. I think I was wrong about what is right for the house and my sanity! Check out this post for what I thought we should do. I will officially go on the record and say that I think we need to put tile or concrete back in the kitchen!

I know! I said I didn’t want tile and still don’t really but I think my sanity does. Ben and I are going to have to think about how to make this work. The tile in our kitchen was done in a super shotty way by the previous owners. It is textured tile and has huge grout lines. As Architects we use tile in our projects all of the time so we have really good access to nice tile. We can install it correctly and create small grout lines.

I have been looking at tile in kitchens on Pinterest and I think a medium to dark charcoal with matching grout is going to be the way to go with tile. I really like the Scandinavian style kitchen with clean black and white accents. If we go this way I will for sure have to find a way to bring in a warm wood to balance out the modern style.

Our other option is floating an underlayment over the plywood as a self leveler. Most people use this to level uneven floors so you can lay tile or put down other floors that need a pretty level surface but it looks really cool as a floor itself. I am researching how to install a floor like this and what the final product would be. There is a great tutorial from Design Mom to get an idea of what I am thinking.

I am hoping this flooring decision will lead us to finding what type of backsplash we should install. We have been going back and forth on this project for a year. Everytime I think we have picked something I see something else super cool that would look great in our kitchen. All of these backsplash ideas are like super shiny objects all over the place! When I have this narrowed down I will write a post about it. Hopefully this future post will help others to get over the backsplash insanity of choices!

Here are my latest backsplash loves!

With the bathroom refresh, trying to restore the yard to have grass again, the kitchen floor, backsplash and the front door it’s going to be a pretty busy spring and summer!
